National Health Center Week (Aug. 8-14)
August 8, 2010
National Health Center Week (Aug. 8-14) gives us an opportunity to recognize the significant contributions of our nation’s community health centers, and the role they play in providing high quality primary care to millions of people, in urban and rural neighborhoods across the county. We thank The National Association of Community Health Centers for sponsoring the week’s activities and for their leadership in planning for the expansion of CHCs as the landmark Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act transforms our nation’s delivery system, and applaud the crucial work of our health center colleagues in their communities.

RECORDING AVAILABLE: Thursday August 5, 2010 WEBINAR
August 5, 2010
This webcast will feature Dr. Leighton Ku, lead author of the report “Strengthening Primary Care to Bend the Cost Curve: The Expansion of Community Health Centers Through Health Reform,” recently released by the Geiger-Gibson/ RCHN Community Health Foundation Research Collaborative.

Joining Dr. Ku to provide expert commentary will be Dan Hawkins, Sr. Vice President of the National Association of Community Health Centers. This report indicates that the expansion of community health centers will make a major contribution toward bolstering the capacity of the nation’s primary care system and reducing the long term growth in health care costs by increasing the number of patients receiving primary care at CHCs by at least 18 million by the end of the decade, and reducing total national medical costs by more than $180 billion over the next ten years.

The inaugural session of RCHN CHF’s new live webinar series launches on TUESDAY JULY 6, 3:00 p.m. Eastern, featuring Dr. Jack Geiger and Professor Sara Rosenbaum. Dr. Geiger will discuss his recent co-authored New England Journal of Medicine article, “Health Care Reform and Primary Care - The Growing Importance of the Community Health Center”, which explores national health care reform and the expansion of community health centers (CHCs) to serve nearly 20 million new patients as part of an emphasis on accessible primary care. The presenters will review the history of CHCs and the potential for establishing the “Patient-Centered Medical Home” model in CHCs, and as a model of comprehensive, high quality primary care for all Americans.

RCHN CHF has partnered with the Clinical Directors Network (CDN), a well-regarded practice-based research network dedicated to developing educational programs and training opportunities for clinicians and other staff who serve low income and minority patients, to produce this series.
